HOW TO IDENTIFY A HIDDEN CHAMPION

There are numerous companies that meet the definition, more than you might expect. They tend to have the following characteristics:

  • Global market share near 50% in narrow markets, limited number of competitors

  • Often extreme specialization, world leader in a specific product

  • Strong brand among customer niche, but otherwise low profile and not known by the layperson

  • Commands price premium, often complex needs of customer and barriers to entry

  • Focused depth of product and vertical integration rather than breadth and diversification

  • Small company by revenue
